We, and especially me, the bride, now wife, enjoyed the planning of our wedding tremendously! I felt a little sad about the planning ending, but everything about our wedding day turned out more magical and fun than we could ever have envisioned. I shared some of our planning moments here already, and others I’ve kept aside as to not spoil everything for the guests. Now that the vows have been said, the rings put on, the sand poured and the honeymoon honeyed, I can share everything else I so badly wanted to share. So join me on my journey while I rewind and remember our happy, mostly glitch-free wedding plans.
I’ve found many brides-to-be struggle with the order of events. So I have decided to share both the sample we received from our venue, as well as our own list. Hopefully this will help to alleviate some stress of someone..
I know.. this is NO easy task 😉 And remember, you don’t need to follow it step by step, time by time. A list like this will definitely help the evening go smooth. And having some key events to occur at certain timeframes, will ensure you don’t miss out on something or realise at 11pm that you still need to throw the garter and bouquet and never got around to cut the cake. Time really does go by so quickly on your wedding day!

At 5:45am I was awaken by the sounds of roaring lions. WOW..
I sat up in bed and watched the sunrise through the window, waiting a while before letting my hubby-to-be know via sms how the lions woke me.We had a delicious breakfast with more than enough protein to get me through the day! After breakfast, me and Lelanie left for the venue. On arrival just before 11am, Lelanie got the bath ready for me, and whilst enjoying this little pleasure, she unpacked the rest of our things. When I entered the room, the first thing I saw was my wedding dress hanging against the wall. Then Magda, the hair lady, arrived. Just before she started on my hair, the photographer arrived. This was also the time when I took out my veil and showed it to my sister for the very first time, as she was under the impression that I was not wearing one at all!! Needless to say, some tears had to be swallowed back..
Hubby-to-be sms’d me to ask if I remembered getting pins for the boutonnieres, and he has reminded me NUMEROUS times during the previous week, and each day I forgot to get some. So needless to say, I did NOT remember to get any, but luckily soon-to-be-mother-in-law had some she could bring along 😉
When Rochelle, one of my best friends and make-up artist, arrived, that was the moment it started to really hit me.. Our wedding day has arrived!! From herewith on I had no clue what time it was and how fast it flew by.
Our coordinator (Driekie), provided by the venue, came around to introduce herself, and said she’ll be coming to fetch me soon. At this time I was already late, but I did not know.. no-one told me.. lol.. I only found out after the ceremony that I was about 20 minutes late!!
So into my dress I climbed 😉
As it was such a wonderful day, we took a stroll to the chapel, and I choked up when I saw my little boy in his suit.. all handsome and all-grown-up looking.. and he looked so proud to be there!! And oh my sister’s little girl, so cute in her blue dress with the flowing sleeves, which she enjoyed tremendously!!
The music started, in went the little ones, then my sister, the doors closed and I had to go stand under a light. My heart pounding, the doors opened and I saw my family and friends’ faces as I started walking down the aisle, and then I saw him. Standing there, smiling at me, looking so handsome in his black suit. We could not take our eyes of each other and finally he came to meet me halfway in the aisle.
The ceremony flew past, all of a sudden we had to exchange rings, then we did our sand-ceremony and all was done.. I’m so glad I had a friend videotape the ceremony, so I could actually listen to every word of it afterwards..
We cut the cake after signing the register, there was one double tiered cake (to cut) and the rest was chocolate-lined wafer baskets filled with cheesecake, topped with fruit..The guests enjoyed the cake with their welcome drinks, while we were having our photosession.
Starters were served immediately after grace and it was DEVINE!!
Avocado-mould served with Biltong.. mmm
All the toasts were done, and my sister pulled a good one as she arranged with two of my girlfriends to give back “their copies of our house keys” as Christie is married now and they cannot come and secretly visit him anymore.. 😀We then surprised our guests by BOTH of us speeching TOGETHER instead of just the groom. I don’t know who was more nervous. Finally after the speech we could relax and enjoy the rest of the night as all the formalities were done and dusted.Main course was buffet style. Roast Lamb with Mint Jelly, Traditional Chicken Pie, Pumpkin Pie, Baby Potatoes in Parsley Butter, Creamed Spinach, and a variety of salads.
After having the maincourse, which was so delicious!! We opened the dancefloor..
Christie chose the song and kept it a secret from me the whole time we were planning the wedding!! So when Juanita du Plessis’s “Engel van my hart” started to play, I had to seriously bite back some tears 😉We enjoyed a couple of dances before the bouquet and garter toss.
For the bouquet-toss I made a break-a-way bouquet, I had attached some charms on 10 roses, so when I threw it, the whole thing broke apart and a couple of woman caught some roses 🙂We then had our little garter show, where Christie took out numerous things before the actual garter 😉 We had a table ready, as he retrieved first a table-cloth, then some flowers in a vase, candles, a lighter, glasses and some wine and then finally the garter..After this, dessert was served.. and oh boy.. there is not a place that comes near to the way Mellow Oaks presents their dessert table. We had the choice of 4 desserts and then they added 6 more!! This was surely the highlight of the evening for every sweet tooth!
The two of us then joined the photographer outside for some night portraits.
Our continental breakfast for the next morning was already brought in and a table set for two 😉 Everything ready to enjoy the moment we woke up.
I can highly recommend Mellow Oaks as a venue, not just for weddings but any function!! Everything was done as we wished and it looked more amazing than we could ever have imagined.. We had such a blast!!

Me and my then still fiancé(Christie) enjoyed breakfast after we dropped Gavin off at school. We decided to try “Eat at 43” in Krugersdorp and they did not disappoint.
After our meal, while enjoying the last sips of our cappuccinos, a praying mantis came for a quick visit and even ‘posed’ for some photos.. cute little friendly critter 🙂At twelve I went to pick up the dresses. Back at home, Lelanie (my sis), was already waiting for me. It was also time for Christie to get Gavin and for them to head through to Pretoria for the night. We said our goodbyes and parted ways. Lelanie whisked me away for the rest of the day, with me not having a clue where we’ll be spending the night!
Hakunamata Health Spa
What a lovely surprise! The love of my life booked me in for a full body massage, and my sister enjoyed a Hot Stones back, neck and shoulder massage.
We relaxed in the gardens for a while before heading to …
A dear friend of mine and the lady who made our wedding cake. They live on a farm right next to the Rhino and Lion Park, nestled in the Cradle of Humankind.
1 week after the wedding.. well.. for.. you know.. the Honeymoon 😉
1 week before the wedding as I thought I would use that time to finish up the favours and our wishing well.. but the venue wants everything on Monday the 30th of April when we have our final meeting to discuss numbers and oh boy.. the final cost of the venue 😀
So I called in my mom, gran and my sis and we finished the favours on Saturday.. Sunday I did the table names and started on the wishing well, which I finished last night.
Monday morning I went to pick up my shoes.. I had them covered in the same material as my dress, as it proved nearly impossible to match the colour AND have the style I wanted. In total (shoes, material, cover cost) my shoes did not even make the R200 mark, which I think is a pretty good deal 😉
Well let’s see what we still need to do..
Meeting with the pastor
Pick up Gavin’s clothes.. (our 7yr old son/ringbearer)
Final meeting with our attorney
Final meeting with our photographer
Finish the inserts for the ringboxes (Last year I bought two small wooden chests for our rings instead of the ringcushions)
Final meeting with the florist regarding bridal & MOH bouquets..
Making the bouttonieres
GETTING MARRIED and party~party~party!!
Ok, so our Kitchen Tea / Tool Party was held on the 14th of April 2012..
Saturday morning the initial plan was to take my sister and her daughter shoe shopping, as we still needed shoes for them for the wedding..
so I waited and waited because Lelanie(MOH) was supposed to pick me up at 9am.
OH BOY!! We got dressed and then my sis ‘messed-up’ my make-up!! 😡
Off we went..
As if that wasn’t enough humiliation, we were told we still need to get some meat and drinks for the party and we CANNOT wait in the car. And there they stop at a small shopping centre we call Rant-en-Dal Spar, where we usually go to buy bread and milk every other day, where I used to work some years ago, where people KNOW us!!
Straight to the butchery, I had my little treasure box with a note that said “Condom Kitty” so we got a lot of second and third and fourth looks!! At the butchery we had a nice chat with a really friendly elderly man, and he was actually the first person that told us that getting married is bliss, that married life is “LEKKER”.
Then we were off (by foot) to the liquor store..
on our way, we collected some more finances for our “condom kitty”..
Waiting in the cue, someone asked us if we were on our way to Greensleeves.. hahahah (now for those of you who don’t know, Greensleeves is a medieval themed restaurant on the Westrand, where you can also dress up and join in festivities the medieval way, which also includes a show)
I showed the lady our kitty and told her we’re getting married and those two (pointing to Lelanie & Corné) have made us dress up and follow them wherever they go. She laughed, and offcourse all the customers in the shop joined in.. BUT.. our kitty got some extra bucks!!
It was at Rocky Aloe Lodge, right next to and looking over the Krugersdorp Game Reserve.
Lelanie and her team of helpers really brought in the medieval theme with all the decorations.. My gran did an amazing job with the castle and throne..
It was sooooo nice to have fi there as well.. he even got some pressies of his own, we had to guess what was inside and if wrong had to take a sip of mixed drinks (my sis went around and begged a little of each guest’s drink!!)
Fi seemed to guess all the kitchen-stuff right,so everyone joked about who really works in the kitchen in our house!! lol..
As we got engaged by ourselves last year, Lelanie made him ask me again infront
of everyone.. That was soooo sweet… he went on his knees and presented me with a white flower (one we picked from the dam earlier in the day) so offcourse I said YES again!!
We opened some more pressies, and then just enjoyed the rest of the party!!
Just a very warm hearty thanks to EVERYONE who made this day so special.
All the photos are on facebook : Click here 😀
I can barely believe we only have 50 days left to our special day 😀
This weekend it’s all about hair and favours..
I’m going for my hair trial tomorrow morning at Bonsai Huisie in Krugersdorp. Feeling very excited and can’t wait to see if Magda is able to do the hairstyle I showed her a picture of. For those of you who are curious about the style, you will just have to wait and see 😉 I will post pictures of the original pic, as well as the trial pics and finally the pics from the wedding day AFTER the wedding.. Some things need to stay a surpise!!
As for the rest of the weekend, we will be working on our favours, the little chair boxes are quite time-consuming, but they look so cute.
Our third meeting with the venue took place on Valentine’s Day! And boy, was it a fun one 😀
We did the mockup of our tables and discussed the decor, flowers and food. With our dark-blue, cream and gold colourscheme, I could never have imagined how wonderful it all came together. I am super excited and sure wish I could share the mockup photos here, but alas, we want our guests to see it for the first time on our special day!
We received a booklet of food choices, so I don’t know how we are going to choose out of all that mouthwatering dishes 😛 Luckily our menu must only be submitted two weeks in advance, so we have plenty of time drooling over our choices..
With 74 days to go, we can now also tick of the flowers and decor! Leaving us with the favours, table names and wishing well to be finished, and the dresses offcourse!
Talking about the dresses, we are going for our measurements tomorrow night.. whoop whoop !!
With everything just about falling into place now, I still can’t shake the feeling that I’m missing something.. Hopefully after our visit to China Mall this coming weekend, that feeling will dissapear, as I’ll be getting the last of the paper and embellishments needed for the favours, table names and wishing well!!
